5 Productive Workplace Resolutions for 2017

New year, new me! That is the famous phrase said by most of the world on January 1st. It comes around every year with millions of resolutions that may or may not hold true. This year, make those workplace resolutions come true and improve your company. Don’t make the stereotypical resolution that ends after the first week of the year, show 2017 what you’re made of in the business world.

Be Less Stressed

The hustle and bustle around the holiday season may really take a toll on employees. Thankfully, a new year means a fresh start to life, including work. This year take a minute to de-stress during the day. Practice at least one minute of focused breathing a day. Research shows that individuals who practice mindfulness at work experience reduced stress and greater productivity. Another way to de-stress is to stand more. Sitting for too long can lead to anxiousness and decreased productivity. Try getting a sit stand desk to keep you on your feet for a little extra time each day. A great way to relax and shake off everything that happened at work is a workout. Yoga or running are great hobbies to pick up and use as a way to take a step back from work and focus on yourself.  Less stress at work leads to more positivity and greater production, which is the ultimate goal of any business.

Eat Healthier at Work

On average, employees spend around eight hours a day at work. Sometimes, these jobs are sedentary and others are not. Either way, it is important to fuel your body with better food at lunch. No, skipping lunch while you are at work does not increase productivity. In fact, that slows brain function and causes the employee to be sluggish. Fruits, veggies, and lean meats are the obvious go-tos for health, but eating at work does not just start and stop with lunch. Little snacks throughout the day are the best way to keep the brain functioning at a high level. Almonds, avocado slices, or berries are quick and easy snacks to keep employees on their toes. Not to mention, eating healthy makes you feel fresh, renewed, and ready to take on the rest of the day.

Learn Something New

In the hustle and bustle of the day-to-day tasks, employees may forget to take a moment and continue their learning. Education does not end immediately after you graduate with a degree. Employees have a lifetime of learning, and when they dedicate themselves to doing so, there can be massive benefits. Often in the workforce, leaders talk about an “edge” to put them ahead of competition. Learning is essential to stay up-to-date in our ever-changing world, and it gives us access to different opportunities than can help not only the employee, but the business as a whole. A learned skill can enhance learning, and show leaders of the company that their employees are not complacent. Pushing yourself out of the comfort zone can spark new ideas that lead to more workplace production.

Make Friends with Your Coworkers

Health at work is largely determined by our social relationships with fellow coworkers.  Plus, recent research shows higher social identification with one’s team or organization is associated with better health and lower stress. Making friends with your coworkers can have more benefits than meets the eye. Being social at work allows for great psychological benefit. Socialness within the workplace allows for positivity. While social media allows us to keep up with our friends all over the world, mixing life and work is not a bad thing.  Friendships in the workplace can lead to friendships outside of the workplace. Short conversations in the breakroom can turn into lifelong friendships. These friendships not only help generate a positive energy throughout the workplace, they increase productivity.

Prioritize and Organize

It’s time to clear away the clutter and bring out the organizer for the new year. First thing to do is clear away the nonessentials. Put paperwork in its place. Whether that be the cabinet, a binder, or anything else, it is important for everything to have its own place. This includes electronics. Clean up the email that has 1000 unread or junk messages. A way to stop the mass emails is to communicate with people in the office directly instead of messaging between rooms. Another wise thing to do is create a to do list. Often at the beginning of the year, there are numerous projects that are starting up, and it is easy to jumble them all together. A to do list will keep you on task and allow employees to get more done in a day.

All in all, the new year is a great time to pull everything together and have a fresh start. Keeping those resolutions will help you and your company out. Make it a great year and keep true to your newest goals.
